Comparison between 2-D and 3-D codes in dynamical simulations of gas flow in barred galaxies

چکیده
Context. One of the ways to determine the contribution of the dark halo to the gravitational potential of a galaxy is the study of noncircular (streaming) motions and the associated gas shocks in the bar region. These motions, determined by the potential in the inner parts, can break the disk-halo degeneracy. Here, two main fluid dynamical approaches have been chosen to model the non-circular motions in the bar region; a 2-D Eulerian grid code for an isothermal gas (FS2) and a 3-D smoothed particle hydrodynamic code

The Disk and Dark Halo Mass of the Barred Galaxy Ngc 4123. Ii. Fluid-dynamical Models
We report a dynamical determination of the separate contributions of disk and dark halo masses to the rotation curve of a spiral galaxy. We use fluid-dynamical models of gas flow in the barred galaxy NGC 4123 to constrain the dynamical properties of the galaxy: disk M/L, bar pattern speed, and the central density and scale radius of the dark halo. We derive a realistic barred potential directly...
متن کاملMolecular Gas in Candidate Double Barred Galaxies III. A Lack of Molecular Gas?
Most models of double-barred galaxies suggest that a molecular gas component is crucial for maintaining long-lived nuclear bars. We have undertaken a CO survey in an attempt to determine the gas content of these systems and to locate double barred galaxies with strong CO emission that could be candidates for high resolution mapping. We observed ten galaxies in CO J=2−1 and J=3−2 and did not det...
متن کاملMagnetic fields in barred galaxies
We study the generation and maintenance of large-scale magnetic fields in barred galaxies. We take a velocity field (with strong noncircular components) from a published gas dynamical simulation of Athanassoula (1992), and use this as input to a galactic dynamo calculation. Our work is largely motivated by recent high quality VLA radio observations of the barred galaxy NGC 1097, and we compare ...
متن کاملThe Properties of the Galactic Bar Implied by Gas Kinematics in the Inner Milky Way
Longitude-velocity (l−V ) diagrams of H I and CO gas in the inner Milky Way have long been known to be inconsistent with circular motion in an axisymmetric potential. Several lines of evidence suggest that the Galaxy is barred, and gas flow in a barred potential could be consistent with the observed “forbidden” velocities and other features in the data. We compare the H I observations to l−V di...
متن کاملMolecular Gas in Candidate Double-Barred Galaxies II. Cooler, Less Dense Gas Associated with Stronger Central Concentrations
We have performed a multi-transition CO study of the centers of seven doublebarred galaxies that exhibit a variety of molecular gas morphologies to determine if the molecular gas properties are correlated with the nuclear morphology and star forming activity. Near infrared galaxy surveys have revealed the existence of nuclear stellar bars in a large number of barred or lenticular galaxies. High...
